OBITUARY.
1 SIR C. A. ELLIOTT. By TelesraDh—Press Association—Oopyrinht (Ree. May 30, 1 a.m.) London, May 29. Sir Charles Alfred Elliott, formerly Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal, died suddenly from syncope while attending early Communion service yesterday morning. The late Sir Charles Alfred Elliott, K.C.5.1., was born at Brighton in 1835. After being educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge, ho entered the Indian Civil Servico at the age of 21. His first important post was as Secretary to the Government of tho North-West Provinces. In tho late 'seventies ho served on two famine commissions, and in 1881 ho was appointed Chief Commissioner of Assam. After three years on the Executive Council of the Viceroy, Sir Charles became Lieut.-Governor of Bengal, a post which he held from 1891 to 1595. He was a prominent Churchman, and was a member of the House of Laymen. REV. ANDERSON GARDINER. Sydney, May 29. The Rev. Anderson Gardiner, Presbyterian minister, formerly in charge of the Bluff Church, and afterwards at Manly, is dead.
