AUSTRALIA AND PREFERENCE.

STATEMENT BY MR. HUGHES. By Teleffraph—Press Association—Copyrieht Melbourne, May 29. Mr, W. M. Hughes, Aoting-Prime Minister of tho Commonwealth, states that the recent statement in London of Mr. Murray, Premier of Victoria, that Australia would accept the principle of Imperial preference in so far as it did not injure herself, did not err on tho side of rashness or generosity. Mr. Murray's views did not represent the views of tho Federal Government. The extension of preference would, added Mr. Hughes, have to be carefully considered; the whole thing must bo based .on some businesslike, scientific system.
