The elections for tho new Portuguese Parliament or Constituent Assembly passed off without incident. The parties hostilo to the Republic did not take part, and practically all tho 231 deputies returned are Republicans, with a few Socialists. It is oxpected that there will be no organised Opposition in the Assembly. The elections in tho Oporto district passed off tranquilly. The Portuguese electoral law, recently promulgated, provides that all males over 21 years of age, who are able to road and write or able to earn their own living, aro accorded tho vote, which, however, is denied to soldiers, civil Governors,' and other State employees in offices of trust. Judges and clergy, whether Catholic or Protestant, may not become deputies.
