A STUDENTS' PROCESSION.

PREPARING FOR CAPPING DAY. Application was made to tho Auckland City Council on Thursday evening by the University Students' Association for leave to hold a street procession on "Capping" Day, Friday, June 2, between the hours of 12.30 and 2-30 p.m. It was pointed out that the procession would be composed entirely of undergraduates and students attending affiliated institutions, and the council was assured that tho behaviour of tho students would be good. The Mayor (Mr. C. J. Parr) thought the council should draw the lino at allowing students to parade in Queen Street and deliver political speeches. Messrs. J. M. Mennie and J. C. Gleeson spoke in favour of permission being granted. Mr. R.. Tudchopc said if the students were going to act tho donkey he objected to the procession altogether, 110 thought the council should know a little, more about the request before, voting on the matter. Mr. J. Court considered that, business people would have to elo?o their premise* during thn progress of the procession. Mr. R. T. Michaels: The procession will brine; a lot of people to town, Mr. Court. It will really be roo<l fur tho shops. Ho thought tho permission should be granted without delay. Tho students v:ere sons of gentlemen, and knew how to behave themselves. The Mayor: Have you been present at a capping ceremony? Mr. Shaw supposed that the procession would bo something of a comic entertainment for thn benefit of (he public, and ho did not think there was any harm in that. It was decided, on the nio'.ion of Mr. J. f>. Iliclcson. in give the students the desired permission.
