KARORI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tho first meeting of tlio newly-elected Borough Council for Karori was hold Inst evening. Present: Tho Mayor (Mr. C. Cathie), Councillors Bradnock, Frost, Hamilton, Standen, Nimmo ; Anderson and Burn. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor J. Home. It was decided to grant the uso of the rccreation ground to the Wednesday Hockey Association on the payment of ss. for each afternoon on which tho ground may lie used. The Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote stating that tho council's contribution for the year would bo ,£2Ol Gs. This is an increase of .£1 14s. Bd. on the amount for the previous year. The contractor* for tho supply of sleepers ior the tramway extension (Messrs. Richardson, Blair, and M'Cabe) wrote asking, in consideration of the cxtremo difficulty which they had experienced in getting the hardwood sleepers from Australia and the loss which they had sustained, that tho council should not enforce tho .£SO penalty. Tho Mayor remarked that tho council had been put to considerable expense by tho n:nfulfilmont of tho contract, and it was decided that the council should adhere to its previous resolution. A communication was received from tlie City Electrical Engineer pointing out tho necessity for the installation of n system of automatic tramway signals "at Dix's corner. It was decided to refer the letter back to the Tramway Committee for report. The Finance Committee recommended that tho offer of Mr. Spiers of .£25 for tho tlires busjs and harness bo accepted.— Adopted. Tho Works and Rccreation Ground Committee recomended—(U That Messrs. Hooper and Wood's offer of .£4 10s. for the right to cut grass on the Recreation Ground be accepted. (2) That Mrs. Lay's fence, which had be<n damaged through tarring operations, be repainted. (3) That Mr. Ahradsoi's complaint re the nuisanco caused by a drain from an adjacent house bo left in tho hands of tho engineer.— Adopted. 'Die engineer's report stated that maintenance work had been done on J oil Road, Main Road, and on Hamilton and Friend Streets. The open culvert on tho north sid„ of tho Recreation Ground had been completed, and had effectually stopped tho seepage. About 10 chains of concrete kerb and channelling had been laid opposite the Recreation Ground on tlio Main Road. Tlio wholo of tho metalling of the tram track had been completed on Monday. About 035 feet of tarring (singlo track) had yet to be completed. It was intended to finish this work at once with one coat of tar, and endeavour to get tho inspection of the final section completed on Friday, May 12, in order to allow caw to run as soon as possible. Tho second coat was to bo put on after the inspection. The work of making up and metalling the Main Roal would bo gone on with immediately.
