He himself was unable to get work, Work had been scarco ill Auckland, and he had come to Wellington to look for employment.—Tho applicant: promised to look for work, and, in the meantime, ho and his wifo wew granted rations for a week. Fashionably-dressed Young Woman, ihank you for all you have doiio for me, was the faltering remark with winch a iashionably-dressed young, woman, cut short a lengthy cross-examination by the members of the committee. Shortly, the lady s story was that sho had been, deserted by her husband in Johannes- 1 burg, and, hearing that lie had como to New Zealand, she followed. She had now only >£1 left, and was unable to get a situation in which she could keep her child with her. Tho child -was all thai she had left, and she did not wish to Ik separated from it. She asked if tho com* mittco could do anything to assist her back to Cape Town. "We don't pay tourist passages here," remarked one member of the committee. "Wo don't pay for trips round tho world —wo only help people who are starving." The interview was closed when the lady voluntarily withdrew. ' A Battle-Scarred Ancicnt. A veteran who received his scars in assisting, the Danish and German armies, and who had lost a limb, applied for readmission to the home. Tho applicant was aggressive, and expressed his opinion of tho management of tho home vert freely. "I want to know why that man (point-. ing a lean' finger at Mr. Truebridge) stopped my leave t9 go to the eye doctor? He spoke to me like a dog." Mr. Truebridge: "You didn't mention that I. also stopped yonr tobacco." Applicant: '"that would have como iit a minute. I have got a bad temper, and I can't help it. I have got one of the worst tempers in this country. I would have been at the top of the ladder instead of the bottom only' for my' bad temper." Mr. Robertson: "You arc sorry for what you've done? Now, you get back to tho home, and behave yourself, and you'll be all right." Applicant: ."Yes,' I will fee that my temper doesn't get away again." .Before leaving the room, the battlescarred veteran was asked by tlio manage;- of the home if he had not been in. trouble for drunkenness and obscene language jn tho home, and. in reply, said that ho did not like Mr. Trucbridgo, who, he alleged, did not "treat him fair." One outstanding grievance onpearcd that he had been put in the lockup for nine days on one occasion, and kont on bread and water. It was announced that there were ITC people in Ohiro Homo at present, 86 males and 30 females.
