RUGBY FOOTBALL. THE MATCHES TO-DAY. At tho Athletic Park to-day Pctono will encounter Wellington on No. 1 ground, and on the adjoining area Poneke will play Southern. At the Petono Recreation Ground St. James will figure in a match against Melrose. THE DOMINION REFEREES. A meeting of the New Zealand Referees' Association was held in the New Zealandcr Hotel 'last evening, Mr. F. Hompleman presiding. There were also present Messrs. J. Laughton, L. Sievers, H. Card, Geo. Howe, and J. M. Robb (hon. sec.), Tho secrotary stated that the compilers of the hand-book had found tho time too limited to enable them to compile an index to tho book, but the matter would be gone into during the year. , . Tho East Coast Referees' Association and tho Marton Referees' Association applied for affiliation with the New Zealand Union.—lt was decided to endeavour to have one union formed for the whole of the Hawke's Bay, tho same as in Taranaki. The Marton application was held over until next in?.It was decided to inform all unions that the resolution adopting a scale of expenses for referees, as laid down by the New Zealand Rugby Union three years ago, viz., 15s. a day, had been rescinded at the annual meeting of tho association. For the future, referees will charge bare travelling expenses only. The secretary was instructed to obtain designs for certificates to be issued to referees who control inter-union and like matches. It was decided that for the future the association should meet every third Friday until September 1. | THE "SOCCER" GAME. ANGLO-CANADIAN TEAM. CHANCE OF PLAYING HERE. Writing to tho secretary of tho New Zealand Football Association, under date March 24, Mr. G. A. Parker, president of the ,■ Canadian Amateur Football Association, states that ho intended visiting England a few _' weeks .later with tho intention of trying to induco the Home authorities to send a strong amateur Association team to Canada. Hopes were entertained that some of tho leading players would mako tho trip. The writer then goes on to state as follows: — "I write to ask. what prospects thero would bs in New Zealand if I extended tho tour thero during your winter season of 1912? I presumo it would bo necessary to 'land ' in . New. Zealand' about July. Would your association make any guarantee, or, failing this, what percentage, of the gross gate receipts would your clubs and associations hand over to tho manager of tlio tour?' It would be possible to bring an AngloCanadian 'team out next year if there was any chance of a financial success, but perhaps an English team would bo the better draw. What aro your views? I am desirous of bringing a team to your shores soon, hence my inquiry. How many matches could bo arranged, otc. ?" On Tuesday night a special meeting of the New Zealand Football Association will be called to consider tho above. NORTHERN UNION GAME* MEETING AT AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, April 28. The annual meeting of tlio New Zealand Rugby Lcaguo (Northern Union rules) was hold here .this evening, the Auckland, Southland, Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, and Nelson provincial leagues being : represented. The report referred to the rapid strides made by the game during tho past season, tlio principal event of 'which was the visit of the British team. Tho balance-sheet showed that tho sum of £1035 had passed,through the treasurer's hands during the season, a small credit balance being left. The new Council of Management were olected as follow:—Messrs. Mulholland "(Auckland), J. C. Gleeson (Hawke's Bay), A. E. Powell (Southland), W. T. Wynvard (Taranaki), and A. J. Powley (Nelson). Mr. E. W. Watts was elected secretary, and Mr. D. W. Ji'Lean treasurer. At a subsequent meeting of the council Mr. JVC. Gleeson was elected president of the Council, and in appreciation of the honour, donated a set of gold medals to bo given to the team holding tho Provincial Shield at tho end of the season.' A new rule was added to the effect that ho delegate or officer to the New Zealand League shall be registered as a player.. HOCKEY. SEASON OPENS TO-DAY. JOTTINGS FROM NEAR AND FAR. On Hay 3 Jlanawatu players will hold a five-aside tournament at Palmerston, and entries are invited from Wellington clubs. Club secretaries arc asked to notify Mr. A. A. Bennett, secretary to the Wellington Association, of their intention (if any) to accept the offer. A movement is on foot to form a new club at Auckland. It is to be a club for ex-Canterbury players, and is to he known as tlio Christchurch Hockey Club. The annual meeting of the Auckland Association was held on April 20. Five new teams were affiliated, and the season opens with a tournament on May 6. Like their southern, friends, they, too, have notified the affiliation of the Wednesday Association. There are five clubs in tho Wednesday Association, including one new club. An old friend of sport—Mr. Walter Johnson, of Christchurch—has severed his connection with various sports bodies, in order to make a trip Home. Mr. Johnson has done much towards furthering tho interests of hockey and other pastimes. The Wellington Referees' Association meets during tho coming week.
