BILLIARDS.
[By Marker.] AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. Mr. H. Virr has again won the ■amateur championship of tho United King, dom. Two years ago he lost it to Major Fleming, but, this year, ho defeated the. warrior by 284 points, the final scores being:—Mr. 11. Virr, 3000 points; Major Fleming, 271G points. The most important gamo in tho London Tournament scries was commenced at Soho Square, when Stevenson (scratch) and lnnian (received 1000 start) opposed each other in the nineteenth heat. Diggle and Inman aro level in the race for premier honours, both having won five games, with two defeats. Should lnman prove successful in this game, and Diggle be beaten by Reoco next week, the Twickenham professional will take first prize. The scores at present stand: Inman (in play), 6871 j Stevenson, 5536. The exhibition contest, of 14.000 up. level, between F. Lindrum, the Australian champion, and A. E. Williams, the visiting English professional, at Heiron and Smith's billiard parlours, Sydney, commenced last Tuesday. Up till the present tho Australian has had all the best of the exchanges, his top-of-thc-tablo-play being very neat, and characterised with an entire absence of hesitation and uncertainty. At tho end of the sixth session ho has a lead oiE 1417. The score now stands: Lindrum (in play), 4900; Williams, 3183. George Gray, who has mado seventeen breaks of over 1000 since ho arrived in England, has been drawing splendid houses in Portsmouth and Soutlisca, and, altogether, has had _ a highly successful provincial tour. Not the least satisfactory feature of tha Australian youth's visit has been tho excellent health that he is blessed with. Ho has been playing without a rest since October, has never once been "off his game," and has won all of tho matches which ho has played. Of course, everything possible has been done to assist his game. Special tables have been erected for him to practice upon, whilst the room is always kept nicely warm, for Gray, at s times, suffers from tho cold. Still, oven allowing for that, he has performed in a wonderful manner. In some of his games he has, at times, been hard pushed by his opponents, but has come out victorious on every occasion. He is not enraptured with tho certificates that the Billiards Control Club have sent him for his record breaks, as they are by no means so handsomo as those which ho received from tho association. Gray, by tho way, has a set purpose. It is his intention to go straight ahead with all his matches, to win by as many as ho can, and wait for no player. We await with interest the sequel' to this.
