HOCKEY.
♦_ —. (By "Bully-Off.") Enter Hockey! The fight between the various elevens commences to-day, and wo will very soon know the strength of the various teams. The grounds in most cases are in very fair condition, especially at Karori and Day's Bay. Readers will probably already know that senior matches have not been set down for decision at the Basin Reserve during the first round. Tlio reason is hard to find. Surely senior hockey would attract more onlookers and support than junior. To the writer's mind a mistake has been made. Granted that the Basin Reserve is not in the best of condition, nevertheless, a senior game, if played there, would give the public a belter chance of "taking to the game." Victoria College try conclusions with Y.M.C.A. at So. 3 ground, Day's Bay, to-day, and the United and Wesley match takes place on No. 1, Day's Bay. Tho other senior game, Wellington v. Karon, will be settled at Karori. Last year's champions will no doubt be able to test the utmost strength of Y.M.C.A., in fact a run over is anticipated. Last Saturday, (he various clubs had a "set to" amongst themselves, and some of the old players showed fair form. New blood was also in evidence, and, in addition, a few first-grade players have taken up their residence here, and certain teams will have valuable assistance this year. Y.M.C.A. seniors arc much in need of more players. Only about 18 members could be mustered last Saturday, and but poor hopes are entertained for the future of the club unless unexpected fortune comes their way. Ilaase will be captain, and the personnel of the team will bo as follows:— Goalkeeper, Howden; right-full-back, Hicksou (not Claude, tho representative man); left, Holmes;-right-half, Worsop; centre, A. Parton; left, Ayres; ri"ht-wing-forward, R. Parton; insideright Haase; centre, probably Paul; in-side-left, Murroll; left-wing, Loader. Karori seniors, are as follow.—Goalkeeper, Leo Davies or Hunter (cx-Wednes-dav player); right-full-back, K. Spiers; left, C." Davies; right-half, G. Aitkon; centre, C. Campbell; left, Putnam; right-wing forward, D.Elias (late of Wanganui). inside-right, Murphy, centre-for-ward Hall (ex Metropolitan); inside-left, Godfrcv Davies; left wing, limit. As Campbell will be absent for a few weeks, it' is probable that Gcndall will fill the vacancy. Mr. Elliott, late of Wellington, and champion centre-forward, who now resides in Feilding. was in town recently, arid passed criticism regarding tho style of plav indulged in by Wellington representative players. The writer gives it here. Pays Mr. Elliott •.—"Short crisp passes are all' very well when, play is near the opposing side's circle, but it is not advisable to hang to the ball, nor In dribble and pass short when plenty of ground lies between the ball and the opposing side's goal. Last year's representative players were, for all that, fine exponcnls of the stick game." It is not unlikely that Elliott will be seen in Wellington, playing for Manawnlu in a shield event this season. It is on tho cards that a sub-association may be formed in Feilding, this sub-association to be affiliated with Manawatu. In such ease. Elliott will no doubt, take a prominent part in furthering the interests of the I game, 1
