THE HAIRBREADTH TRAIN AFFAIR.
FUND BEING RAISED FOR CLAUDE. (By TelesrapU.-Prcss Association.l Auckland, April 19, In connection with the stopping of a runaway train by Mr. Claude at Weslfield, further particulars show that when Claiulo caught sight o{ the runaway train it was 100 yards away and the express one mile and a halt distant, both travelling down a decline—the express at twenty miles an hour, and the runaway at eight miles an hour. Claude jumped on the runaway and applied the Westinghouse brakes, waved a red light to the express, and informed the two passengers of their danger. When the express pulled up it was within two yards of the runaway. Even if the driver of the express had seen the danger earlier he could not have averted n collision.
The Hon. J. Carroll (Acting-Prime Minister) and the Hon. A. Thorne George, M.L.C., have headed a subscription to' a fund to recognise Claude's service. It is intended to recommend the Government to do something substantial in that direction.
