UPKEEP OF A DEER PARK.
THE GOVERNMENT DOUCHE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Dunadin, March 31. At a meeting of tho council of tho Otago Acclimatisation Society to-day a discussion took place regarding the management of the red deer herd in tho province Mr. M'lntosh said that tho manner in which tho society had been treated by the Minister for Internal Affairs was disgraceful. The Government had gone agtinst tho society at every point. '.Nio council had recommended ono month for shooting fallow deer, and that the heads consist of only 14 points, but two months' shooting had been allowed, with no restriction on heads. Mr. Chisholm (president) raised tho question of whether the. society should continue tho control of tho rod deer, herd. It seemed to him that tho' society, having effected the acclimatisation of the red deer, had very little more to do with them, especially in view of 'the continual opposition of tho Government. The society made nothing out of tho red deer. Mr. Bu'tterworth said that the rod deer would cost tho society £250 to £260 this year, and the revenue would be about £130, Ho proposed that they should approach the Government for a £ for £ subsidy on their expenditure on tho red deer forest, and, in tho event of some help, not being forthcoming, tho society should abandon tho control of tho red deer country. Ho moved:— "That an application be made to tho Government for a £ for £ subsidy, and, in tho event of # the application being refused, tho society should seriously consider tho question of the further management of tho herd." The motion was carried unanimously.
