The Union Company's liner Mahcno encountered a heavy south-west galo during the run from Auckland. 'I'ho storm was at its height at midnight on Thursday, when the vessel was struck by a tremendous sea, which damaged tlio deck fittings, and smashed a dozen cabin windows. Tho water poured in and flooded tho smoking room, social hall, and alleyway on the upper deck, so that the passengers were knee-deep in water.

A family of three, a man, woman, and child, wero rather severely cut by the falling glass.
