.' : — : * ~~ (By Teleirraph.-Special Correspondent.) Wanganul, March 31. At the annual meeting of tho AVanganui Rugby Union, the Rev. J. L. Dove was elected patron, Mr. Geo. Spriggens president, and Mr. D. H. Pownall secretary. Tho annual report, >vhich was mainly a review of last season, showed that the union was £50 better in funds than was the case at tho end of the previous year. An insurance scheme for players has now been adopted. The returns of the AVanganui Education Board show that there aro 14,269 scholars in this district, the sexes being almost equally divided. Included in this number are 424 Maori children, receiving instruction at 60 schools. Mr. G. V. Pearce, M.P. for Patea, who is delivering a series of pre-sessional addresses throughout his district, is at present meeting his constituents at tho Wanganui end, and is being well received everywhere. His vigorous criticisms of the Government are making an evident impression. Tho Hon. T. Mackenzie will bo hero to-morrow in connection with a club function, and it is being asked whether his appearance has any connection with, or is in consequence of, Mr. Herdman's trenchant attack on tho, Government last week.
