9 (From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmsrston North, March 31. "American Slavery from Queen Bess to Abe Lincoln" was the subject of a lecture given at the Municipal Hail last night by the Rev. J. J. North, of Wellington. There was a large attendance, and the address was listened to with attention. During the evening a number of vocal and instrumental items were also given. Nearly the whole of the space available has been already taken up in the machinery hall at the show grounds in connection with the Dairy Show, to be held in July next. Tho Technical School' Committee propose to erect an engineering shop on a section which it has acquired near the present school. The Education Department has granted a subsidy of £300. Entries are coming in freely for tho Manawatu Caledonian Society's gathering on Easter Monday. lii tho dancing events they are already so numerous that it will bo necessary to provide two (lancing stages to enable these contests to be got off within' the time at tho disposal of the committee. In the running events, a number of the leading sprinters of the Dominion will appear. Loyal Manawatu Lodge of Oddfellows, M.TJ., held its quarterly summons meeting last night, N.G. Bro. W. S. Woodroofe being in tho chair. Bros. Pettett and Woodroofo wore elected lodge delegates on tho Friendly Societies' Council.' To celebrate tho fact that tho sick and funeral fund had reached £4000, the trustees (Bros. T. T. Korslako, D. Pringle, and W. T. Wood) were entertained at a "social," at which lady friends of members wero present. Presentations were made to the trustees on behalf of the lodge by Bro.::S...Jrt.Watson, .aridjtjio, latter was presented witlva handsomo marble clock, as a recognition of his services as secretary. Musical items wero rendered by a number of ladies and several members, and altogether a pleasant timo was passed. No fewer than twenty-two candidates are in sight for the forthcoming municipal elections. Of these, none are on the "ticket" selected by,tho Citizens' League. Sis of tho present council are offering themselves for re-election, while seven others aro standing.
