ATHLETICS.
TREMBATH GOING TO ENGLAND. . For many months past it has been an open.' secret, among lovers of. athletics and : followers of pedestrianism in particular, that W. F. Trembath, of Gore, intended visiting Great Britain' with the intention of testing his speed against the best runners available, with a viewto. laying claim to the world's half-mile professional championship (says tho "Southland Times"). .All arrangements have now been completed for tho trip, and Trembath will depart from tho Bluff oh -.Monday next, thus taking the preliminary step in a laudable quest. Had he been an amateur performer, he would undoubtedly havo been chosen as a member of the Festival of Empire team sub-f-i«\ised by the Government to perform in London at a great athletic gathering, to' take place during-the Coronation festivities, but his status as a cash runner debars him from participating in tho money thus available. However, Trembath decided to seek the professional title at his own expense, and with a knowledge of this fact before them, his admirers throughout the colony, and many sports societies at whose meetings he has formed an attraction, ; have announced their intention of subscribing towards his expenses. Trembath's recent deeds-on the track—four consecutive half-mile handicap races from scratch under 2min.—prove that he is a worthy representative of New Zealand in, whom to repose confidence as a prospective champion.
