COMING MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
THE CHRISTCHURCH ROLL. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Christchurch, March 16. Owing to tho wider franchise, the.' Labour Party is making a great effort to capture the Christchurch Mayoralty and the majority cf- tho seats on the council, and they have an army of' canvassers in the field enrolling names. Last year the total number of names on tho main and supplementary rolls we.s 11,908. Against this tho main roll for this year, which closed on February 15, had 17,492 names, and close on 4000 claims for enrolment have been received since tho main roll closed, and they aro coming in daily. The supplementary roll closes for claims on Tuesday. What is greatly adding to tho task of the compilers of the roll is that hundreds of claims aro coming in w. duplicate, no fewer than three coming in from one woman. This is said to bo duo principally to different canvassers calling oil electors, and persuading them to sign, a further form. Another frequent source of trouble to tho compilers of tho roll ia the duplication of applications for enrolment by tradesmen who may happen to possess a shop in the Central Ward and a residence in ono of the suburban wards.
