AN IMPERIAL DISASTER

RECIPROCITY AGREEMENT CRITICISED. Ur Tok-zraDh-Prcss Association-CoDyrieht (lice. March 7, ID p.m.) London, March 7. In Hip House of Lords, Lord Ampthill, in initialing a dcbalo on (ho CanadianAmerican Reciprocity Agreement-, strongly criticised the inaction of Mr. Brycc, the British Ambassador at Washington, and the (.iovernmenl' in the niattor. This inaction, In- assorted, had forced Canada t.i abandon her national policy. The commercial union of Canada and the United States must icad to a political union.

Lord Morloy, Lord President of the Council, declared that most responsible men in Canada and the United States laughed at the idea of a so-called political annexation. If in some remote day political events happened they would not l)c the result of reciprocity, but of general causes.

Lord Midleton paid a tribute to Mr. Bryce, who had gained Canada's confidence, but the agreement was an Imperial disaster. He dissented from Lord Arapthill's view of a. commercial union as the pioneer of political union.

CANADIAN OPPOSITION GAINING. (Eec. March 8, 0.5 a.m.) . Ottawa, March 8. The Opposition is gaining ground in the fight against the Reciprocity Bill. An Anti-Reciprocity League has been formed in Montreal. Cabinet Ministers assert that the Bill will certainly pass, although the official circles are apprehensive of the Democrats' action in the new Congress. The Opposition has given notice of motion asking Parliament to postpone the Bill pending action by the United States.
