THE LATE ME. G. C. WHEELER. In the death of Mr. George C. Wheeler, which occurred at his house at Halcombe on Monday night, the Manawf.tu, Rangitikei, and Oroua districts lose a wellknown and respected settler. Perhaps there has hesii no more popular breeder at shows in these parts of the Dominion and no better show authority for many years past than the deceased. He was a public-spirited man in every sense oi' the word. His optimistic personality during critical stages in the history of the Manawatu A. and P. The deceased's name will live as one of tho founders of Iho society. In addition, he was for twelve, years chairman of tho Oroua County Council. He was also Trustee of tho Wangumii College. Deceased nurehased his late home at Stanway, Halcombe, in 1377, when tindistrict was pretty well nil bush-laud. As a catlle anil sheep breeder ho has been identified witli its onward sweep. Hereford cattle and Komney sheep were his two chief lines. Indeed, he introduced the Romney sheep to tho district. Tlu deceased also started the New Zealand Flock . Book, and the Hereford Stud Book, and acted at; president of various breeding associations. His exhibits of Komney sheep and Hereford cattle have for many years been in the forefront. At Halcombe the deceased, a helpful member of the Church of England, performed the duties of lny reader for many years. His death, which eamo as tho result of an illness which first showed itself Inst January, will bo greatly regretted.
