PRISON BOARD.
ITS FIRST MEETING. The first meeting of the recentlyconstitutcd Prison Board was held on Thursday in the Chief Justice's Chambers. The Attorney-General was present, and one of tho objects of the meeting was that he might confer with tiie members and go into the matter of procedure before ho departed for England. Some appeals from habitual criminals were dealt with. The Attorney-General states that, as tho result of tho Crimes Act of last session, under which the Prisons Board was appointed, a new system of probation is neccssary, and new probation ofiicers. Tho co-operation of the various organisations that are at present dealing with social reform work will bo enlisted. These societies iiiclutlo the Salvation Army, and others .formed to help discharged prisoners. Tho AttorneyGeneral believes that tho hearty cooperation of these societies will bo obtained, and he has left behind full instructions in that direction. Cabinet has given the proposal its aproval. Iti was not, however, intended to abolish altogether tho present probation officers. ! Eleven million more sovereigns were misted in' 1010 than ill 1000.
