RACINC COMMISSION. ISr Telecrap!].—Press Association.) Wanganui,,March 3. Tho Racing Commission held a preliminary meeting in camera this morning, Mr. M'Yay (Napier) taking tho place of Mr. G. I'. Donnelly, who resigned. The commission decided to inspect the racecourses between Wanganui and Now Plymouth on Monday. notes and comments. [Bl- CitEN'COE.I The Newmarket Handicap will be run at Flcmington this afternoon. When liose Noble won tho D.J.C. Handicap at Wingatui last Saturday, he established a fresh track record for a mile and a quarter. Oil two occasions during the Dtmedin Cup meeting Mr. H. Piper put his assistant on the barrier stand (says "Sentinel" in tho "Otago Witness"), and the fields were sent away whilst the official was 011 tho ground. Mr. Piper no doubt allowed his assistant to do tho merely mechanical act of releasing tho tapes, because it gave him a better chance to straighten up ono or two bad actors at tho post. l Milo, who won the hurdle race on tho first day of tho South Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting, is a halfbrother to Playmate, who won the open hurdlo race at Wanganui oil Thursday. R. Hatch rodo, three winners on tho opening day of tho Timaru races. At the present time this rider is certainly making tho most of bis opportunities, and his percentage of wins is very high. The time of the Wanganui Cup raco this year is the slowest since Nobility won in 1901. Not a few judges averred that if Lady Medallist had started in tho Wclj lington Cup she would have brought about the downfall of Miss Mischief. Tho running of the pair at Wanganui to-day will be watched with interest for, allowing for the higher scaio.of weights, they will meet on much the same, terms as they would have done in the Wanganui Cun. A. Ackroyd, an Auckland horseman, who recently left for Australia, made his first appearance in the saddle at the Maitland meeting, steering Batross to victory in the Maiden Handicap. Batross started at ail outside price, and it is stated that it was largely due to Ackroyd's riding that Batross got home by' a head. The Auckland Racing Club Committee met on Tuesday afternoon, when the question of tho totalisator was discussed. It was decided to mako temporary arrangements for the. Easter and winter meetings (says the "Star"), and that tho Hon. E. Mitchclson and Mr. 11. H. .Hayr visit Brisbane to examine tho workings of tho electric totalisators in uso there. There is sonio doubt about the Hon. E. Mitchclson being ablo to mako the trip, in which caso probably sonio other member of tho committee will bo sent. Red M'Gregor, although a Great Northern Steeplechase winner, is still a maiden hurdler. He! is nominated for tho Maiden Hurdlo race at Ohinemuri, in which event his sister Bonnio Jean also figures. Not infrequently tho ■winner of' the hurdlo race on the first day of tho Wanganui meeting wins on tho sccond day also. Both first day's winners, Ribstono Pippin and Playmate, aro engaged to-day, but 12st. lib. looks rather a stiif impost for a littlo horso like Playmate to carry to victory.
Blaircour's dam, Wakeful, won the Oaldeigh Plate, tho Newmarket Handicap, ' and tho Doncaster Handicap in 1901. Should Blairgonr win tho Newmarket Handicap to-day lie will liavo accomplished an equally _ good treble, with the Caulfield Futurity Stakes, in place of. the - Doncaster Handicap. Wakeful ;did not gain a place in tlio' Futurity Stakes in 1901,'liut'"th'o "following year she ran second to Sir Footo. with Ost. 131b. in the saddle, and with the ssmo weight up she filled third place in 1903 behind Sir Leonard.
At tho .Wanganui Jockey _ Club's meeting this afternoon, principal interest will centre in tho race for the Jackson Stakes, in which a field of six is engaged. In tho nine contests for the race, two-year-olds and four-year-olds liavo each won tlirco times, while a three-year-old, a five-year-old, and a six-year-old have also won the event. In to-day's race half of the candidates are two-year-olds, but- thero is also a smart three-year old engaged in the shape of Madam Madcap. Probably R. J. Mason's bracket, Pierene and ViceAdmiral, will carry more money than any of the others on the machine, but tho oth-er four candidates have all shown good form this season, and will not lack supporters. "Word lias been received of the death of the stallion St. Peter, full-brother to St. Paul and St. Clements. About tho best of St. Peter's stock that have raced is the Auckland pony Peggy Pryde.
Tho .Dannevirke Racing Club's autumn meeting takes place on Wednesday and Thursday next.
A.' AVhittaker had a unique experience on the second day of tho South Auckland meeting. Ten minutes before tho advertised time of starting the first race he was informed that the disqualification imposed on the first day had been removed, and, hurriedly changing, ho rode Taketurnu, which fell. In all ho'had five mounts, winning three races and falling twice.
There was talk of Mr. Harry Beasley riding Caelder in the "Softon" last November (says "Blackthorne," _ in the London "Sportsman"), and it is now said that if' both Jerry M. and liis stable companion take part in the "National" the old-time crack amateur will be on tho son of Hackler. Should this prove tho case, tho latter would want nothing on the score of jockeyship, for the veteran seems to retain all liis old nerve and strength, even though it is twenty years since lie won tho race on Comcaway. There liavo been few better performances in the Grand National than that of the big, plain-looking son of Cambnslang, for he broke down somo distance from home, and withal managed to squeeze past the judge in front of that great 'chaser,' Cloister, who was in receipt of a few pounds. Comeaway was something of a champion, though probably Mr. Beasley, if asked his personal opinion, would declare in favour of TJsna* or St. Marnock (killed at Liverpool or Manchester, I forget which) as the best liorse lie ever rode.
