The Wellington provincial championships will be held at the To Aro Baths to-day, under tho auspices of tho Wellington and Y.M.C.A. Clubs. Two provincial championships will be decided— 100 yds. and 440 yds, For the former distanco six entries liavo been received, t-licso being R. Healy, I'\ Roberts, C. Bruce, B. C. Freyberg, R. Ronayno, and M. C. Stranger. These includo some of tho best sprinters in New Zealand, so an excellent race should result. For tho longer distance, Healy and Freyberg aro expected to put up good performances. Other starters will be B. O'Neill and Murrell. A feature of tho afternoon will bo tlio performance of the "Monte Christo" feat —a trick which has not been performed in Wellington before. Eight teams have entered for the schools relay race, and thore will also bo several handicap events and the usual diving competitions. . , • LADIES' CARNIVAL.' ' Tho ladies' branch of the Swifts Amateur Swimming Club will hold its first 'carnival at tho To Aro Ladies' Baths this afternoon. Diving, life-saving, and novel events will also be decided. A meeting of the "Wellington Centre .of tho Amateur held, last night,"Mr. l ' Wi''Hv"Jones'"pro-' siding. It was decided to grant tho Woodville Amateur Athletic Club permission to hold a meeting on March 22, instead of March 18, tho date originally applied for. The Petono Club was granted permission to postpone its meeting until March 11.' Permission was granted to tlio Karori Club to hold an evening meeting on March 8. The Wellington Methodist Bible Class Union given permission to hold a sports meeting iri connection with the .Easter Camp at the Hutt. Tho . Presbyterian • Bible Class Union were granted -permission to hold a meeting on April 15 at Belmont. Intimation was received that J. Berry, of M ruler ton, and V. S. Williams, of Wanganui, would be unablo to make the trip to the New .Zealand championships at. Christchurch. A.. V. Stohr telegraphed from New Plymouth that lie would make' the trip to Christchurch. Regarding the running of A. H. Gyllies at the Wanganui Caledonian Society's meeting on January 23, a considerable quantity of correspondence was received from the Auckland Centre, but as tho Wellington Centre was not satisfied, with the position in which the matter stands, it was tlccided to write to the Auckland Centre, asking that body to obtain fuller information. ' Robert. Hayes applied ..for reinstate-, ment as an amateur walker, he having been disqualified for competing on February 15 at a picnic sports meeting, where the prizes were cash or-trophies. .Hayes appeared before the Centre last night, and pleaded ignorance of the rules. After discussion it was decided to inform Hayes that ho musfc'mako formal application. W. M'Ewan applied for reinstatement as an amateur, he having been disqualified for competing at the same picnic meeting as Hayes. It was decided to hold over tho application until M'Ewan appeared before the centre. Mr. T. W. Leslie was appointed an additional delegate to the Conference of Centres, to bo held at Christchurch. Tho secretary of the Athletic Football Sports Club wrote protesting against payment of expenses of the delegates to a conferenco of centres to be hold in Christchurch at tho time of tho New Zealand chamjvonshipsi Tho letter was received with thanks. 1 ' THE CARNIVAL THIS AFTERNOON. • The chief attraction at the Port Nicholson Amateur Athletic Club's meeting this afternoon will bo tho trials between Turner, Fitzgerald, and Cashman in tho walks, Winkelmann in the high jump, Halligan in the 120 yards hurdles, and Baxter in the threo miles flat, with a view to their selection in tho Wellington team for the New Zealand championships, which are to bo held in Christchurch on March 13. It is hoped that the efforts of this enterprising club will be" rewarded by a largo attendance. Tlio first event will bo got off at 2.30 p.m. sharp, and it is intended to strictly adhere to tho programme in regard to getting off the events to time. Hallip.an, who holds the championship of Scotland in the 120 yards hurdles, intends making an effort to establish a new record for this event ill the Dominion. Those already chosen to represent AVellington in tho championships will he seen at tho very top of their form, as olio and all have been training hard to assist Wellington in retaining tho shield. The Garrison Band has been engaged to render selections during tho afternoon. Tho only tiling that now remains to ensure success is a fine afternoon, and, the club has been once disappointed, it is to bo hoped that they will havo this also. ASSOCIATION. SWIFTS ANNUAL MEETING. The eighteenth annual meeting of tho Swifts Association Football Club was held at the Hotel Windsor last evening, Mr. B. L. Salmon, vice-prcsidcnt, prcsidin gover a largo attendance. Tho annual report and balance-sheet were adopted on the motion of the chairman, who, in the course of his
remarks, specially referred to the success of the senior eleven, and to the largo number of members belonging to tlio boys' divisions..

Medals for tho best players in the boys' division teams were presented as follow:—Fourth Division A: Best back, J. Adams; best forward, E. W. Guise; most improved player, J. Balks. Fifth Division: Best back, W. L. Borrows; best forward, E. A. Richards; most improved player, J. H. Porter. Special medals were also "awarded to J- H. Adams and W. L. Borrows for all-round play. The Fourth Division players will receive their awards later. It was decided that practice should begin on Saturday, March 25. It was also decided to endeavour to arrange a Match, with a Manawatu ,bovs' team at Palmerston on June 3. Thirty-five new members were elected. YACHTING. OCEAN RACE TO-DAY. This afternoon, if weather permits, ,the Port Nicholson Yacht Club will hold an ocean race, commcncing at 2 p.m. The crews to bo taken by the yachts are:— Mahina: Messrs. W. and P. Moore, and H. Sergeant, and H. Scott. White Heather: Messrs. G. Hoggard, B. Donne, A. Holmes, 11. Gray, and J. Barnard. Windward: Messrs. R. Millman,'• F. Cooke, S. M'AVilliams, and C. The local committee of the Festival of Empire met last nighty when a report 'was received explaining tho position of affairs in Auckland. Subscriptions are coming in freely in tho north, and as the. report of tho local sub-com-mittee'conveyed the same good news, it is anticipated that within a few days' now funds will be raised sufficient 'to cover the expenses of tho New Zealand representatives. For the -Boxing Carnival in aid of the funds, arrangements are well in •d. ' Bums and Leckie, who recently met. at Petone, havo been matched for a "purse, and'thcre will also be several amateur contests, and an exhibition of fancy skipping by Mr. Walker. The secretary of tho Committee telegraphed to M. Champion asking for a definite reply as to whether he could •make the trip. Roberts has received a letter from a sporting'friend in San Francisco, in which it is stated that Mr. W. W. Naughton, of the "Examiner," is coming to Wellington by tho Aorangi. - After spending some few days here, ho will go on to . Auckland, to visit his relatives. Mr. Naughton is generally regarded as the- greatest authority on boxing, and. is a leading American, authority on other branches of sport. It was ho who took Peter Jackson to America years ago. ■ Since residing in San Francisco, Mr. Naughton lias ' always been popular in sporting _ press circles', aud he holds tho position of president of tho Press Club. Ho is best known here and in 'Australia as special correspondent of tho Sydney "Referee," which journal he represented in July at the big fight at Reno.

The Wellington Boxing Association is arranging for a trial bout for .Murphy, a boxer recently arrived from Australia, where ho had an opportunity of studying the methods .of' the Americans.. Invercargill, March 3. At a>mceting of directors of the Southland Caledonian Society this evening tho long-standing breach with the New Zealand Athletic, and Cycling Union' was patched up, the meeting unanimously deciding: "That the Caledonian Society of Southland reaffiliate with the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union on the terms contained in the report of the delegation." This will enable all competitors at the Caledonian games for the past three years to compete at all athletic meetings held under the jurisdiction of the union from this date.
