Wedding at Palmerston. . ■ A wedding of more than ordinary interest took place at All Saints' Church yesterday afternoon, when Miss .Alys Riddiford, second daughter of Mrs. Frederick Riddiford, was married to Mr. Henry Fitzhorbert Arkwright, of Overton, Marton, third ton of Canon Arkwright, of Newberry, England. The church was beautifully decorated by the friends of the bride, and •presented a charming appcarnnce, a wealth of' flowers and foliage lmviug been used. The Forvico was fully .choral,' and was conducted by the Rev. G. V. Ivendfick.* • The choir was composed of pupils of Craven School, of which the britte is an ex-pupil, and their singing was a feature of the eercmony. Jtiss Drew presided at the organ. ,'Pho bride, Who was given away by her brother-in-law, wore a very, simple but graceful dress of rich, ivory Uuchesse satin, the skirt having a panel in front of roso Venetian point lace, while a fichu of the' same lace draped,.thc,-bodice. Tho bridegroom's present to tho brido was-a diamond ring and-a diamond pendant 'and to tho bridesmaids were given-gold curb bangles linked, with greenstone.; The bride's present to. the bridegroom was a-silver-cigar box.' After the ceremony a reception was ..held at Te Marae, tho residence of Caplain Hewitt, R.N., which had'been lent for the occasion. The house was most beautifully decorated, with flowers, ; roses, asters, car-' nations, and sweet peas - being arranged ,in..gr«at, profusion. Miss Sylvia Fell (Nelson) passed through Palmerston on her wn_y to visit her sister, Jlrs. Luido I.evion (Napier). Mr. and Jlrs. Howley (Timuru) spent a few days with Jlrs. l'olts before leaving for England in the Athenic. A most successful garden party was held at Jfr. G. il; Bonnet's fmo-grounds, at Terrace End, yesterday afternoon, in aid of the funds of the Methodist Church, The weather was beautiful, and there'was a very largo attendance. Games of every description were provided for the amusement of visitors, and refreshments were provided by the lAdies of tho congregation. The fuudt benefited to a substantial amount.
Wellington Wedding." At St. Mark's Church on Tuesday, February 21, the marriago was celebrated of Jfr. Robert Hare, formerly of the , Greytown Post Offico staff, but now of W'angnnni, and oldest son of Mr. C. J. Hare, of Greytown, to Miss Josephino Kiliiiisior, youngest daughter of Mr.-J. - Kilmistcr, of Glenbervie Road, Wellington. Tho ceremony was performed by the Rev, A. Jl. Johnston. ' Tho bride, who was given away by her brother, Mr. Walter Kiluiister, wore a dress of cream satiu charmcuse, trimmed with silk lace and pearl passementerie, and the customary veil and wreath of orange- blossoms. She carried a . beautiful shower banquet. The Misses Hare, sisters of the bridegroom, attended her as bridesmaids, arid woro frocks of heliotrope silk cqlienne with tunic skirts and corsascs trimmed with silk laco and Oriental , insertion. They had on black hats lined with silk and mounted with wings totone in shade with their dresses, and carried bouquets to match, They received from the Bridegroom gold hoop brooches Studded with stones. The bndo's present .was a gold cablo bangle, and the bridegroom received from tho bride a gold alWrt chain. The going-away frock was a navy blue tailor-made, worn Vith a vieux rise hat. Tho brido's mother woro a dress of black chiffon taffetas and cream toque with black tips. Mrs. Hare, the mother of the bridegroom, was in a tailor-made costume and green- floral toque, with white osprcys. Both carried bouquets of mauve passion flowers. ' Jtr. 1 and Jlrs. Yesterday afternoon a very successful garden fete in aid of tho Jliramar Church funds was opened in tho Club Houso at Jliramar by Jlrs. Wallis, Quite a number of people from town and from tho surrounding suburbs had mado a point of being present, and a great deal of interest in tho welfaro of the. quaint little church that overlooked the whole plain was displayed. Viewing it from the distance, it seemed as though it had stepped straight from the Tyrol, so pretty, aloof, and picturesque it looked' against its background of dark-looking hills. Tho. Jliramar Chiirch is fortnnato in having zealous workers,.aiid particularly in Jlrs. Cleland, who, lias taken' tho choir under her chargo and helned it enormously. The fete was held ?or the purpose of raising funds for tho purchase of a new orgau, the ono in possession, of which Jlrs. Gilkison is the organist, being somewhat "full of years"- and disorders. - Jlrs. Wallis, who was accompanied by lier sister, Jliss Williams, was received by Jlrs. Brodie, the Jfayoress, and Mrs. Cleland,- and little Jliss Beryl Cleland presented; her with .a. bouquet .of. sweet peas. In her- opofling speech! Jlrs/Wallis spoke of the interest sho and Bishop Wallis had always taken in tho Jliramar Church, and sho wished it all success. Wallis took tho opportunity of saying. "gcod-byo" to tho Jliramar parishioners, ns she leaves very shortly. ' A Farewell Tea. A very enjoyable "farewell" tea was given by Jlrs. Newman at her home in llobson Street on Tuesday for Jlrs. Jloorhouse, who is leaving for England. Very lovely flowers wero arranged in tho drawing-room, and- in tho dining-room where teii was served tho tablo was arranged with plumbago. Jlrs. Newman wore a dress of petunia-coloured ninon over silk and trimmed with iisher net; Mrs. Jloorhouse was in r. black and white dress and black hat with white ostrich plumes. A return progressive tennis match was played at the Hutt yesterday between the Hutt and the Wellington Tennis Club, and « most enjoyable, time was spent. Tho weather; was perfect for playing, and the grounds belonging to tho Hutt Club nro extremely pretty. . Murphy, Mrs. Rose, the Jlisses Foster (2). Calender, Cuff, and Brown. Miss Williams proved the prize-winner, her score being thirty games. Jliss Webb and Jliss Atmore came second, with twenty-seven. Tea was served in tho pavilion, tho tablo being arranged With miniature sunflowers. . Mr.' and Mrs. G. 'J. Clopham have just returned to Wellington after visiting Auckland. The Victoria. League; which was holding a farewell 'reception' to . Lady ' Ward ' "on Tuesday evening next in tho Art Gallery, has been obliged' to alter the date,'and it will now be held on Monday evening, February 27, instead.
Jliss Williams was a passenger by tho Ulimaroa yesterday, and is staying w'ith her sister, Jlrs. Wallis, at Bishopscourt. Mr. and Jlrs. J. Perry, of Maknri, and their small son nro visiting Wellington, and are staying at Jliss Ankotoll's. A farewell tea was given yesterday by the Misses Butts for Miss Ethel Chatfieln, who is leaving for England next week. Nurses Robertson' : and Buttle have resigned their positions oh the staff of the Wellington Hospital. ; The engagement is announced of' Mr. George' Slaclt, .jeeoud son of Mrs. Slack, Of Awatoitoi, to' Jliss Ray, of Sydney. The Misses Turner (2), of Kelburno, intend' leaving New Zealand for England in April, and they will probably bo away for a year. Miss Harriott Lanyoii, of Silvorhopo (near Marton), leaves on a trip to England by, l tho Jloldavia on March 15. Jliss N.. Moore, of Jlasterton, who has beon spending tho last four weeks at Seatoun, is now the guest of Mrs. W. Broad, nt Marton. Captain and Jliss Holmwood, who hare been staying at Seatoun,- left yesterday for Jlasterton.
