DROWNED IN THE AVON.

DEATH OF MR. A. F. OUR. (By TeleeraDh—l'rcss .Association.) Christchurch, February 22. Mr. Alexander Forbes Orr, manager of Fullers' Opera House, was found drowned in the Avon towards Dallington early this evening. It appears that he went out alouo in a canoe, and that somo youths walking along the bank of the river later saw the canoe floating bottom upwards, A boy in a punt came along, and was assisting to get the canoe to shore when he saw Mr. Orr's body beneath. It is assumed that by soma means th<t canoe overbalanced, and Mr. Orr was unable to extricate himself. When the body was got ashore artificial respiration was tried for over an hour, but without avail, and when the medical man who was sent for as soon as the fatality was discovered arrived all ho could, "do was to pronounco life extinct. Mr. Orr came from Wellington, where his people reside. . >

Tho news of the above fatality will be received with great regret by a largo circle of the deceased's friends in Wellington. He was in this city last week attending the marriage of, his niece, Miss Lodder, and left for the south by the Mararoa on Saturday night. Mr. Orr was the son of the late Sir. John Orr, of this city and Johnsonville. and has numerous relatives here, including his sister, Mrs. A. R. V. Lodder, of tipper Willis Street. He was educated at the Te Aro School and Wellington College. Somo years ago he developed a liking for the stage, and toured Australasia as a member of the Nellie Stewart Company. 'Somo months ago he was appointed manager for Messrs. Fuller and Sons at the Theatre, Royal, Wellington, and subsequently was transferred to Christchurch. The deceased, who was unmarried,- was only 29 years of age.
