SANK AT HER BERTH.
THE PILOT'S STRANGE MISHAP,
Early yesterday morning, about <1 o'clock; 0110 of tho nightwatclnnen on duty on tho wharves discovered that tho steamer Pilot, belonging to the i Wellington Harbour Ferries Company, Ltd., was in a sinking condition. He immediately telephoned Captain Watchlin, of the Duchess, who came down to seo what the matter was. By tho timo that he arrived at the wharf the dcck of the sinking vessel was awash, and a few minutes later her keel touched bottom, the hull having a' slight list to port. Steps will be taken to raise her as soon as the weather clears. Inquiry shows that tho vessel's boilers wero "blown down"' on Thursday evening, in readiness for tho engineer's periodical inspection, but nothing can bo ascertained concerning- tho cause of the mishap till she. has been examined. On a previous occasion, when she was owned by tho Union S.S. Company, tho Pilot, sank at- the Queen's Wharf. Slio is 27 tons register, built of Australian "hardwood about 20 years ago, and valued at something like £1500.
