THE MAN WHO TOOK TE WHITL IBy Telegraph—Press Association.) New Plymouth, January 13. Mr. William Stone Partly, cs-inspeo. tor of polcie, died to-day after a brief illness; aged 75 years. [The late Mr. Pardy served with the police in Canterbury in tlio davs of provincial government, but afterwards came to Wellington, and joined tho Armed Cbstabulary at tlio depot. He iras later transferred to Auckland, and appointed to tho position of detective, gradually rising from sergeant-major to sub-inspector, and then to the highest position in the force. For some time Inspector Pardy had charge of the Taranaki district, and, while at New Plymouth, ho took a prominent part in tho arrest of To Wliiti and his followers on the occasion of the "ploughing" episode. Many consider that it was largely- owing to the tact he' displayed that the affair passed off as quietly as it did. During the last few years of his connection with the force, - Inspector Pardy was in charge of the Otago- and Southland districts. He retired on pension in 1002J
