PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(By Telegraph-Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, January 3. The police here have laid a charge against a Wellington bookmaker.for ■ alleged "betting after the advertised time of starting a race at the recent Ashhurst meeting. The case, which will.ba heard at Palmerston on. January 16, is brought under the Gaining Act, 1908. . The Palmerston and Terrace Erid bowling greens were fully occupied yesterday, the former with the New Year pairs handicap tournament, in which five rounds were played,, leaving two couples to play off, and the latter with a tournament for ferns presented by Mr. E. Toms, of Palmerston, for players of not more thau threa years' standing in this tournament. Rinks from Pahiatua, Levin, Foxton, and Terrace , End took part. A riiik from the last-named club, consisting of Messrs. Munday, Sinclair, F. Sollitt, ;and' Martin, wero the winners, and hold the ferns pro tem. A severe thunderstorm passed over' Palmerston at 0 o'clock this evening, and was followed by very heavy rain. So heavy was the downpour that tho water channels proved inadequate to carry away the'tloodwater, and, for a time, the footpaths in several places were ankledeep. '
