MASTERTON NOTES.

V (From Our Special Correspondent.! Masterton, January 3. Tlie weather has been warm and humid duriug the last few days. To-day a slight shower of rain fell, and it would not be surprising if a thunderstorm were to follow. Harvesting ■is still in' progress, and the conditions have, generally speaking, been all that could be desired. The Wairarapa Caledonian Society is no ' doubt entitled to congratulate . itself on the result of the sports gathering held on Monday. The takings at the gate amounted to £ÜB, which is £io in excess' of the amount taken last year. The arrangements for the meeting were very creditable to the officials, and particularly to the new secretary (Sir. W. Gillespie)) who has had only a few weeks in which to acquaint himself, with the duties of the office. A "Scotch concert" was held in the Town Hal! last evening. The building was crowded to the doors, and the gathering' was most successful, l'rommcnt I among the contributors to the programme were .Messrs. D. A. Kennv and Parkes, of Wellington, and Mr. Peter A. Jiadie, of Pataorston North. As showing the orderly nature of the crowds in Masterton, it may be mentioned jtljat 'not one arrest bias been made in; •the-town—during—the—holiday season. , Maize for winter fodder is being grown) •.by several farmers-jfi,' district this year. There are,at present seventeen patients in the local hospital, all of whom.'. are convalescent.. - ~..,- .. ~-.,■...... .. • • A linesman on" the Wairarapa section of railway named White is reported to' have had"two of his toes accidentally cut off to-day. The Masterton Methodist Sunday School held an enjoyable picnic on Mr. Macara's farm at Okuna yesterday. There was a good, attendance, and the usual games were indulged in.
