NOTES AND COMMENTS.

£Br Glekcoe.! Weights fer the 'Wellington meeting a'ro duo on Thursday next. Tho right to chargo at tho entrance gates at I'oxton during the currency ■ of the meeting on January 21 and 23 was recontly sold for .£2OO. Tho New Zealand marc Cnicinella will bo a runner in the Bagot Handicap of twelve furlongs at the V.E.C. meeting at Flemington to-day. She has been allotted top-weight, (Ist. 71b., and is conceding 81b. to Dhobi, -who is next, on the list. At the Ivyneton (Victoria) meeting on December 21 the Multiform mare, Idyll, won. the Turf Club Handicap of one mile. Another isew Zealand-bred one, Haereiriai, was placed third. Tho midsummer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club will be advanced a further stage to-day, when the principal, item of interest to those not fortunate enough to );e present will be the meeting between Danube and King .Soult in tho Great Northern Derby. Other likely starters are Goldtinder, * Birkdale, and Domino. Auckland followers of racing' arc, generally speaking, loyal to their own horses, and probably the support accorded. King Koult will be the means ol' sending Danube out a point or to in the market. Both colts will bo ridden by crack horsemen, viz., I'. Brady and H. Gray, so that nothing should be lost on tho score of tactics. A great deal depends on how the race is run, but ono looks in vain amongst the other starters for one that is likely to set a solid pace, 60 as to'ensure a truly-run race. In the absence of such pace, generalship will come in, and if it is slow over the first six or seven furlongs, Brady might "steal" the race on King Soult. However, if there is no pace on, Gray will probnblv go to the front himself, as was tho case in tho C.J.C. Derby. This will then afford the spectators a royal race up the straight, for Brady is ono of the confident kind of jockeys, .who rarely win a race frc-m tho front.-"Glencoe" inclines to the opinion that, in a truly-run-race, Danube is tho better of the pair. In this contention, Jir. Ci. Morse, handicapper, concurs, vide his Summer Cup adjustment when he decided that the southern colt should conccde King Soult 101b. Weight adjusters are uncommonly good judges of weight for age events. . Tanlicvinikau will bo the sporting rendezvous for most Wellington followers of racing to-day and to-morrow, when the summer meeting oi' tho Wnirarapa Racing Club opens. Never in the history of the chili'has tho course appeared to better advantage, for the recent bounteous rainfall has had the effect of covering the lawns and tracks with bright verdure, and the going is all that can be desired. Gcwl fields are engaged in the various events, and, with fair weather probable, the club should bo rewarded with a bumper attendance. The public have the choice of three trains to travel by. New Zealand owners who intend being represented at the Australian Jockey Club's autumn inoeting. at which the principal events are tho Doncaster Handicap and Sydney Cup, should note that nominations for these evsnts cltiFe on Wednesday next. llr. A. fi. Whvlc, secretary of tho 'Wellington Racing Club, is empowered to accept entries. With so iuueh- racing just concluded owners arc something prone to overlook nominations for t forthcoming events. Those which requite attention this week arc tho Ivarioi Jockey Club and the Fusion Jocksy Club, entries for which closo on Thursday and Friday respectively.

Black Northern, whose first day's performance caused , i oino remarks at lillerslio on Clip day, is engaged in the New Year Hurdle Baco to-day, and belli Tauira ami Delegate, who finished in front of him, have not been paid up ior. Since racing at Woodville tho Sir J.addo colt, Sir Knox, has gono on the right way at Opaki, ami tho meeting between hfm and Bronze in the two-year-old raoe at Tauherinikau promises to bo one of the features of tho meeting.
