THE GREATER TRAM SCHEME:

" -W.angariul, December 21'." n Ihe 'Wanganui Borough Council has adopted loan proposals for a tramway m-E™ involving the raising of £30,000, and ; allocated as follows:— • Additions to power plant, £7500; additional buildings, £1500; : additional cam, ; £8000; duplication "of existing aml ' , ext ™ sion : of single track" .£01)00; overhead crossing at Guyton Street, £4000; interest, contingencies, etc.-,'- £5000.- :-A--polb'of ratepayers : will bo taken in about a mouth's time. The scheme is part ,of the tramway extension which is to bo undertaken ,bv the.' council,, tho Gonville-Castlecliff 'Tramway Board, and tjio Wanganui East Borough Council. The two 'latter bodies ■ ■ will link up their systems with that of; the Borough of Wanganui, which will t supply power for all three over a total' track of about twelve miles, and the j above represents , tho town's contribu-; tion to the combined scheme. It is ill-! tended also to extend -tho'tramways to: St. John's Hill and Upper Aramoho,; but this is a matter which does not I call for consideration immediately, and! a separate loan will be raised for that I, purpose when tho time -arrives. Thai question of electric. -power supply in. { conjunction with the.tramways is alsol held over. A lively meeting of Smithfield rat<V; payers was held last evening; the objeetil of the conveners being to obtain an ex-, pression of opinion in favour of severance from tho. Town District and amalgamation witli the borough.■The result-of the vote showed, how-ever,-that the agitation is_ confined to - . . a very few. The motion in favour of amalgamation with Wanganui found only six supporters, and was overwhelm* ingjy defeated. ■
