ELLERSLIE TRAINING. (Bj Tclccraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, December 21. "Work on the tracks this morning was on tho whole of an unimportant character. Fast work was dono on the sand. Culprit went four furlongs in _51sec. Bridgo went a mile, with tho assistance of Midnight Sun over the last five furlongs, in lmin. 49sec. Bridgo looked well. Theodore,, from a standing start, ran four furlongs in 53 4-ssec. Tauira covered a round of the hurdles, fencing well. Diabolo, Gipsy Belle, Swimming Belt, Lady Medallist, Tauira, Sir Prize, and St. Toney arrived yesterday. "With the exception of the Waikato horses, all the visitors arc now at Ellerslie.
WOODVILLE JOCKEY CLUB. (By Tclesrauli—Press Association.) Woodvillo, December 21. The Woodville Jockey Club made a profit of £191 oyer' tho last meeting, notwithstanding the fact that tho Gov- 1 crnment tax amounted to £310. Tho additional totalisator tax at last meet■ing camo to £130. The stewards have decided to ask the totalisator proprietors to pay Mrs. Tro-. week on three tickets wrongly issued to her at the meeting last February, and which were the' subject of a Parliamentary inquiry. SCRATCHED. Dj TclcuraDfo-Prcrfs Association—Copyrlstat (Hec.< December 21, 10 p.m.) SydnDy, December 21. Golden Slipper has been scratched for tho Villiers Stakes and the Summer Cup' at .the Australian Jockey Club's meeting. , NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Br Glencoe.] Up till 8 p.m. to-night, Mr. E. A. Laery, secretary # ' of the Wairarapa Racing Club, will receive acceptances for the forthcoming • meeting. The club's offices are at Featherston, and: the' tolegraph' office there is open until 8 p.m. • Of late Penza has not been moving as well as her trainer would wish, and her owner has therefore decided not to race her during the holiday meetings. Master Soult's full sister, Dearest, who will represent the Porirua stable in tho Palmerston North Stakes, is to be railed to Awapuni this morning. She will be ridden by L. Traill.
Mr. H. Levien, who-has for a long time agitated for tho introduction of tho totalisator in New South Wales, is shortly to pay a visit to New Zealand. It is thought that during his stay in tho Dominion, he will pay some attention to the working of the machine, with a view to being better posted when next he urges the New Soijtli Wales Government to give it a trial. It is stated that Turbine will be shipped to Australia at the conclusion of the A.R.C.- Cup meeting. _ Mr. W. Davies, owner of the Menschikoff gelding, paid a successful visit to Sydney somo years ago with tho Grand National winner Haydn.
Tho ex-Yaldhurst sprinter Machine Gnn, now at tho stud in New South Wales, has already got several winners, and his stock is very highly spoken of. Tho big son of Hotchkiss could himself go very fast, and if his progeny aro as good as ho was thoy will be really high class. During the holidays it will be a somewhat difficult matter to obtain suitable horsemen. Several trainers are already finding trouble in getting riders. Bookmakers desirous of fielding , at | the Manawatu meeting on Friday must make application for licenses to-day. ' The Perth sportsman Mr. J. S. Mackay, brother of "S.P." of that name, and probably best known as tho owner | of Soultline, intends going in for.racing i in .a largo .way in Western Australia.' He will bo present at the Auckland Cup meeting, and will be a buyer at the yearling sales. ' Speedy Meg, who left theso shores a maiden, and subsequently won a raco at Ascot in Juno last, was successful in a 14.1 handicap at Rosebery on December 14. She* was made the medium of a heavy plunge, and her victory took a lot of money out of tho ring. Judging by the number of outside buyers that have intimated their intention of being present at tho Auckland yearling sales, it seems as if the prices there will again be on the big side. Breeders in New Zealand have had a particularly good time during the last few years, and, as thoy appear to be keenly alive to their business, it is to be hoped that tho good times will continue. The Manawatu Racing Club s meeting commences to-morrow, when the Summer Handicap and the Palmerston North Stakes will bo run. Tauekaha is now back at Ellerslie at his old quarters at T. A. Williams's st-ables. _ . . Bookmakers wishing to bet at tie Manawatu Racing.Club's meeting must apply for licenses by 4 p.m. to-day. In connection with tho Hutt Valley Trotting Club's meeting, bookmakers should note that applications for licenses must be mado by noon to-mor-row.
The yearling colt by Multiform from Otterden (imp.), a mare 'brought to this State in 1908 (says the "Sydney Daily Telegraph"), lias been handed to J. Scobio to train for her breeder, Mr. A\. Brown, who has already the youngster's two-year-old sister, Foremost, in Scobio's stable. Mention .of .Mr. W. Brown.recalls the story that has'been going the rounds.for somo time frast relati'vo to that gentleman's impending retirement from the turf, and those who know how scarce good and liberal supporters of racing are win bo pleased to learn on excellent authority that Mr. Brown lias no-intention-of-following tho track rumour'has laid down for him. The historic Paisley Bells are to bo lent by the Paisley Corporation to the Scottish Exhibition of National History, which is to bo held in Glasgow next year (says a Homo paper). The Lanark Town Council have also agreed to lend their Race Bells for the same purpose. The Paisley Council give their bells on condition that insurance policies be efFected on them, covering loss against burglary and fire, for £2000. Tho bells, whicli are three in number, and conicahin shape, are dated 1620. During tho timo the Paisley raco meeting was held under Jockey Club Rules tho Bells were regarded as tho blue ribl>on of tho meeting. For a considerable period the Town Council allowed tho owner of tho winner of the Bells to keep them for eleven months, but latterly, owing to tho great valuo attached to them in respect of their antiquity, they declined to allow them out of the custody of tho council. Amongst those who have won the Bells are the Earl of Eglinton, the Duke of .Montrose, and Lord Rosebery. 'ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT. Mac (Brooklyn).—Cannot state definitely.
