ABOUT A VOTE OF THANKS.

MR. FISHER AND THE MAYOR OF NAPIER. It will be remembered (says- the "Hawke's Bay Tribune" of December 17) that at the last meeting, of tho Napier Borough Council the Mayor refused to allow Councillor M'Grath to move a resolution of thanks during tha transaction of ordinary business. An explanation of. this extraordinary ruling, however, may possibly be discovered in' the fact that the motion-conveyed thanks'to Mr. F. M. B. Fisher, M.P., for representing the council's interests in the House -when the Theatre Site Bill came up for discussion. The resolution was unpalatablo to the Mayor, who combines civic with Parliamentary duties, and he. insisted on notice.of. motion being given. Councillor M'Grath submitted with good grace, and we,learn lie has now given notice to move that the Mayor be aSked to give his reason for refusing to. take a resolution of thanks during ordinary business; also "that a vote of thanks be conveyed to Mr. F. M. B. Fisher, - M.P.j - for representing the Napier Borough Council in the; absence of the member for Napier when the Clive Squaie Theatre Site Empowering Bill was before the House of Representatives." It will' be interesting to near the Mayor's reasons for delaying tho performance of a common- act of courtesy. Mr. Fisher, when in ' Napier, was asked'by several councillors if -he would do what he could to assist the passage' of the Bill. Ho viewed the site, visited other reserves in the town, and readily promised to do all in his power. When asked, if the member for Napier were absent when the Bill came up, if he would represent the council, . Mr. Fisher replied that he would. History shows that tho member for Napier was absent when the Bill came on, and Mr. ■Fisher did represent Napier. Surely .it would be only a fitting act' of . courtesy that Mr. Fisher should be thanked for services rendered to the town.
