Jphtmtfi "JTiT^STrr' : Ine Board of Selection to appoint the New Zealand l Rhodes Scholar for the cur-' rent year will meet at Government House -at 10.30 o'clock ''this ' morning. It will comprise: His Excellency the 'Governor: (in his private capacity), Sir Robert Stout, and Professors H. B. Kirk (Victoria College), A.. P. W. Thomas (Auckland University College), J. Hight (Canterbury College), and P. Marshsll (Diineilin University). .On' this 'occasion there are only three., candidates: David. S. Smith, LL.B. (Victoria College); Montague Ongley! (Otago University); Alfred George Marshall, M.A. (Auckland University College).' . 'Mr. Smith is the. eldest son of the Rev. J. .Gibson Smith, of St. .'Andrew's J'res'byterian Church, Wellington. Born at Invercargill in.lßßß,'he received.his early education at the ■ Invercargill Bovs' High School, awl • subsequently attended .Wellington College and Victoria College where 'he. completed, his university degree course, in 1909.' Mr. Smith has proved a sue-' cessful debater. and. athlete. Mr,. Ongley was- educated first, at .the 1 Waitaki Boys' High School,'and later, by means of a junior scholarship, entered the' .Otago University. : . As an.athlete-he v has gained a wide reputation, having beenVes-; pecially prominent''in football, ..cricket, and boxing-circlep. -• .• Mr. Marshall is tlio son of the Rev. Mr. Marshall, formerly of,. Pukekohe. After gaining various scholarships he qualified for his B.A. degree and then for his M.A. degree, gaining first-class honours in mathematics'and mathematical physics. He now holds the position, of assistant to the Professor of, Mathematics at Canterbury College. He, too, has been prominent in debating and athletic cireles. .. .'.
