PATEENA STRUCK BY KAIRAKI.
■ . .—»■■■■ . • 'AN ACCIDENT AT PICTON. \ • On arrival from Nelson and Picton on Saturday night tho Union Company's Pateena bore evidences of having been in collision, for the counter and the starboard side of the' vessel were covered with a large piece of canvas, behind which was a big gaping bole. From inquiries made, on board tlio vessel it . was found that while the Pateena was moored alongside the wharf at Picton, about 5 p.m. on Saturday, the Kairaki, inward bound from Wellington, whilst being berthec at the wharf and coining bo\Y_ori, cob lided with the stern of the Pateena. So great was the impact .that the after lines holding the vessel to the wero carried away, and the ironsori which : surrounds the vessel's stern !. (forming the counter) was ripped and torn asunder like matchwood." "Some o£ the iron ribs', fully,- half an inch; m thickness, were broken -and 6eci as if they were tin. The gratings and tbe steering gear were also smashed aad broken. It is understood that tfte Kairaki also suffered some damage. It is said that the fore-part- of her deck 11 sprung, as well as minor damage?, to her bows. In the opinion of many, it is thought that the Pateena had a very, lucky let-off, for had the damage oo~> curred below the waterline. there is ntf telling what might have happened.'
