HOLES IN THE SAND.

LYALL BAT SURFERS WARNED, A youth bathing in the surf at Lyall Bay yesterday came within measurable distance of a tragedy. He was bathing in tho surf and was submerged about waist-high opposite the inen's shed when he stepped into a hole and lost : the ground. As he could not swim, ho splashed about in the usual helpless way with frightened hoys under such, circumstances', but those near took no ; particular notice, fancying that he was merely amusing himself. ' Then .he went down once, and) the alarm spreading, a swimmer made for the boy and pulled him to safety without anything serious occurring. Other surf-bathers have come upon holes in the'sand, where the water, was over their heads, which points to the fact- that the big scour noticeable at Lyall Bay under certain conditions washes out these holes or depressions in the sand. If they, were , permanent', notice-boards warning bathers could be erected, but tho chances are that with such a long sweep of beach of such even character, such holes would never be sluiced out twice in the same spot*-
