COMPLIMENTARY DINNER.
— « "THE DOMINION" STAFF ENTER TAINED. _ The directors of the Wellington Pub* lishing Company entertained the head? of the various departments of Thi Dominion newspaper at dinner at the Grand Hotel 011 Saturday evening, tha Hon. C. J. Johnston, M.L.C., chairman of directors, presiding. A very enjoyable evening was spent, compliments being exchanged between the directors and.their guests concerning' the pleasant relations whicli have existed on the paper, and gratification ex. ■' pressed 011 all hands at the success ol company's operations. ■ In toastin" ■the Wellington Publishing Company," the editor, Mr. C. Earle, remarked on the public spirit which had prompted 1 • , , nt^ers company, and' winch had played a conspicuous part ia shaping the policy of the paper, they, had so successfully and so swiftly forced into the front rank of New Zea-j land journalism. Mr.'A. L. Herdman„ 1,1 responding on behalf of the company, said lie thought it would be>' recognised that The Dominion stood fop. what was high and honourable in our public life; that ifc was fearless in expressing its opinion on public affairs. Ao nation could in the end prevail: v.'liose people did not possess a high sense ol their obligations as citizens: a deep love of truth and honour, and that hno spirit of devotion to their count™ which m time of need placed the puW lie interest before personal aggrandise< ment and individual gain. The Dominion, t;e felt sure, would always be with those.who were endeavouring to raise' the standard of our national life. ' air. J. Duthie proposed the toast, "Tha Literary Staff," and incidentally referred to the standing the paper had! gamed through their efforts. Messrs. M. 0. Jxeane (assistant editor), N E Burton (sub-editor), and H. Plimmeri urnY of staff) responded.- ' The toast of, the Commercial and Mechanical! btaffs was proposed by Dr. Anson, whodwelt on the harmonious relations whicW exist between all departments of thopaper and the important part played by the particular depart* ments the subject of his toast. Messrs. Francis (accountant) and W. W. Todd (printer) responded. "The Directors"were. toasted at the instance of tho manager, Mr. A. Blanton. In his experience, he said, he had never been associated with directors who had shown such personal enthusiasm in the-welfare of their company and of their staff. •Messrs. W. Muir and H. Williams responded. The other toasts honoured were "The King," "The Governor," and "The Chairman of.Directors." Inproposing the toast of his Excellency the Governor, the chairman seized tho occasion to remark on the great good fortune which had fallen to New Zealand in the choice that had been made of those called on to fill the vice-regal office here. In the present occupant of that office they already had good.reason to believe that the high,traditions of the past would be fully maintained. Tile toast "The Chairman" was enthusiastically honoured after, highly complimentary references to thfe manner in which he had filled the position of head of, the Wellington Publishing .Company,for the past two ,years. ■ '
