LOST OVERBOARD.

PASSENGER BY THE- MAORI. (By Telegraphs-Press Association.) Christchu'rch, December 15. An elderly man named. Lawrence, a bootmaker-of .Sydenham, was lost overboard from the ferry steamer Maori this morning, when the, vessel was about two miles off Lyttelton Heads. A sailor who was working on the upper deck heard a splash, and saw the man struggling in the water. Lifebelts were thrown overboard, one dropping within a yard or tw.o of. the man, and a boat was lowered as soon as possible; while the steamer went astern. The search was. continued for a couple.of' hours, but the man was not again seen. . The Maori arrived late in port, and passengers for the south'missed the first express. A later, message states that it is supposed that Lawrence jumped overboard.
