Mr. Justice Edwards refused to grant a discharge in bankruptcy to Edward George Robe, blacksmith's assistant, of the Thames. His joint liabilities with one Thorburn totalled .£I2OO, and he has no prospect of meeting obligations save for a . rise in the value of scrip.' The judge said bankrupt had been guilty of contracting debts' when he had no prospects of paying, except on a gamble which did not eventuate. CAMPAIGNING FOR REFORM. Nolson, December 15. Mr. Martin, political organiser for the Opposition, opened the Nelson campaign at Richmond last evening. Tlie Mayor of the borough presided. There has been no Opposition candidate for Nelson for over eight years.FORGERY AND UTTERING. Christchurch, December 15. Peter John Lewis pleaded guilty at the Magistrate's Court to a charge of having forged and uttered a Post Office Savings Bank withdrawal slip for .£2O. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Gisborne, December 15. John Kettles, a recent arrival from Scotland, was charged -with forging the name of a mate on railway works to a post office withdrawal order for <£1S 19s. He pleaded guilty, and was remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence. Accused after obtaining the money, went to Dnne J din, where he was arrested. THE HUIA AND THE QUEST. Christchurch, December 15. The. Hon. D. Buddo has. received a report from Mr. J. Stevens to the 'effect that no huias were- seen on the Rangitikei River side .of . the ranges. The Minister. states that he is prepared to send out further expeditions to search for birds, with a view to placing specimens in sanctuaries. ALL THEY KNEW OF IT. Dunedin, December 15.The unique position ill which two solicitors were placed was disclosed in the '"Arbitration Court this . morning, ; 'J.'hey appeared in a cpmpensation case in which a - farm labourer named Keen sought to recover compensation ' from Anderson, a farmer at .Herbert, for the loss of the sight of an eye. The. solicitors admitted that Keen's landlady had told them that he had settled the case himself, and ■ had received payment. That was all the solicitors knew of the matter, and the case was. struck out. ACQUITTED. Greymouth, December 15. Constable Martin was. acquitted on a charge of perjury, the jury saying that, owing to conflicting- evidence, they,gave him the benefit of the doubt. BOOKS AND CASH REQUIRED. _ Wairoa, December 15. Judgment for the plaintiff was given to-day in . the case of the A. arid P. Association v. . Beckett, for delivery of books and cash held by him as actingtreasurer of the old. County Association, which is now amalgamated with the District Association. ■ . WOMAN'S 1 PATHETIC PLIGHT.. Palmerstori, December 14. An elderly woman named Mrs! O'Brien was found lying seriously ill in Grey Street this evening, and was removed to the hospital. It is believed that she belongs to Feilding.

The Isorth Canterbury Education Board has decided to form a military unit in connection with the Training College, and inform all male students that they-would be required to join this unit and resign their membership of other corns. . ■ INVERCARGILL SHOW. Invercargill, December 14. People s Day at the- Summer Show was a brilliant success. The gross takings at the gates show, an increase of ,£2OO over those of last year, and the crowds on the two days have been estimated to ascrregate 15,000 people. ,
