Responding to the impulse of the season, members of. the City Conncil last evening, having.'made a quick dispatch of business, accepted ,an invitation from .the Major to repair lo his room. The pressmen present'also joined tho party. A brief hut. most- enjoyable social gathering ensued. An opening toast of "Ourselves," proposed''lin a lively utterance by the Mayor, was" heartily honoured. Councillor J. P. Luke, in proposing the health of the, Mayor, ■ Mayoress and family, gave $lr. and Mrs. Wilford unstinted praise for the sclf-sacrificing wiy in which they had carried out their official duties. The company drank the toast with musical • honours. Mr. "Wilford, in responding,. dwelt on. Iho harmony which had on all occasions marked the deliberations of the council. A final "(cast, proposed by tho Mayor, iv<s that of the council "staff, with whom, for the occasion, lie associated the piess. Messrs. Palmer (Town Clerk), Merlon (City Engineer), and O'Shea (City Solicitor) responded on behalf of the various departments. ... Mr. F. J. Beechey .has been appointed sole teacher at Makuri, and Mr. J. Davidson, at'present head teacher at Parkvalo, has been appointed to a similar position at Daleficld. _ The City Council adjourned last evening until January 26; 1911. During tho period from November 20 to December 13, twenty-five applications wore made to the City. Engineering Department .for permission to erect, alter, and extend'buildings. Thirty,plans were examined aiid approved, and Dermits issued. The value" of work authorised is as follows City, .?8270; Melrose, ,£7000; Wadestown, .£350; Northland, .£900; total, The City Council has accented the tender of H. S. King for the supply of car trucks for the Tramway Department. A poultry farm is advertised for' sale in this issue by-Mr. Georgo Nathan land agent, Hunter Street. LOWER.HUTT LAND SALES. H.
