UNSKILLED WORK.

ABLE -AND ABLE-BODIED IN ' ' DEMAND. , "The Department is in the happy position of being able to offer employment to all able-bodied men used to this (unskilled) class of work," says the Labour Department's journal. "There has been a great diminution in the number of applicants, but those calling having any adaptability and desire to take the first work offering have succeeded in getting employment promptly. .Work for fifty pick-and-shovel men is available, but it is essential that applicants should have previous experience at the work. The demand for country workers is still.greatly in excess of the supply, general farm hands being principally inquired for at wages ranging from .£1 to .£1 10s. per week and found; while ploughmen have also been in strong demand at good wages. Few of this class of worker are available. At no time durins: the present year has the outlook been brighter for all classes of tradesmen, but as far as the city itself is concerncd, there does not seem to be any special demand, tho Department's work being mainly confined to districts outside the city. During the month just ended, 179 married and single men with 21G dependents were found employment on Government and private work. Of this total 156 were sent to private employers and 23 to public works."
