ISSUE. Australian Government notes wero circulated on December 1, and tho "Sydney Morning Herald" refers to the matter a≤ "An Tlietoric Event," and says:"Early yesterday morning, when certain customers of the Bank of New South Wales desired to be provided with notes to satisfy the requirements of . their pay-sheets, they we've surprised at having' Australian Government notes tendered in place of- the time-honoured, bank note. There was certhe two documents. The old Bank of New South Wales form was the basis of the Government notes, though they had an unfamiliar appearance through being unsigned. Across the ■ face, in addition to a scarcely decipherable coat,of-arms, intended to depict a kangaroo and an emu, had been printed the following legend:— AUSTRALIAN NOTE. PAYABLE IN' GOLD COIN AT THE COMMONWEALTH TREASURY • AT THE SEAT OF GOVERNMENT. , , . GEO. T. ALLEN, Secretary to the Treasury. JAS. E. COLLINS, Accountant. Dee. 1, 1910. This issuo U understood to have been the first made in Australia, though consignments of the new notes arc now in iiie hands of the Commercial -Banking Company of Sydney and of.the Australian Bank of Commerce. Some little time hack; tile banks wero asked by tho authorities at tho Treasury.to give them an estimate of what notes they were likely to require for December and February delivery. AH unsigned forms had - already been handed over these, boing purchased by the Government. It may not be fully realised, but these notes are costly to producc£so and £100 notes cost quite ss. each irrespective of duty and other charges, while the ordinary £1 note costs about Id. The difference is largely due to the fact that the number of notes of tho smaller denomination printed is much larger, and thcroforo . less- costly than those of the higher denominations. It will cost tho Government many thousands, of pounds for tho unsigned note forms of the banks. A single account the Treasury will receive from one of the banks will exceed £12,000. The Australian notes now to bo made available will bo of the following denominations:—£l, £5, £10. £50. £100. There will be no IDs.-notes-to bo had till the Govern-, ment gets its own form designed and Drinted. '•.-■■•
