' > ■■' ■ ■■■■:-.- The Men's Free Club,,which Miss Glendinning inaugurated some months back, is not working out well financially. The men and youths, who patronisoit in very large numbers,. apparently do not think it worth while.to contribute to what is proving. a great benefit to them, as during the whole time it has been in existence the total sum received through the con-tribution-box in the rooms hes only amounted to a few shillings. An endeavour is nevertheless to be made to put the club on a better financial footing. Mr. J. Balsillie presided over a meeting of the Palmerston branch of the Farmers' Union ou Saturday. A circular was read from the Director of Field Experiments (already published), asking for information re diseases in turnips, and it was decided to distribute the forms' accompanying the circular to farmers interested. The question of the shed hands' demands in the shearers' dispute was discussed, but no action was taken, as' the Defence Committee had the matter in hand. ■ Opening services in connection with the mission which is being conducted here by. Dr. Henry and Mr. Potts were held in the Agricultural Hall, on the Show Grounds, yesterday afternoon and evening, and ivero very largoly attended. A! choir of nearly two hundred voices formed feature of the proceedings. It is estimated that there were nearly, two thousand people at .last night's service. Dr. Henry's address was an impressive one, though his voice appears to be suffering to some extent. • . ■ ■■■■ . ■■
