BOYS' INSTITUTE.

A SUCCESSFUL TOURNAMENT.

The athletic tournament, organised on behalf of the Boys' Institute, and held at the Basin Eeserve on Saturday, was fairly well patronised by tho public and passed oil very successfully. About fifteen hundred spectators were in attendance when the tournament was at its height, among those present being: The Prime Minister and Lady Ward, Sir Robert Stout, Sir George M'Lean, tho Mayor, and Mrs. AVilford, and Mrs. S. A. Khodos. The Pipe Band and Military Band were in attendance, and during the afternoon played acceptably a series of appropriate selections.

Throughout the afternoon the various officials were kept busily engaged. Frequently two or three events were in progress simultaneously. As an additional bait to spectators a number of side-shows were provided, including a Punch and Judy show, and a modern adaptation of the ever-popular "Aunt Sally." The scouts and cadets who figured prominently in the various events of the afternoon provided on the whole an interesting display. The scouts ran up brushwood huts in a surprisingly short' space of time, and in such activities as lire-lighting, knotting, and first-aid work showed themselves both adept and speedy. In their own work the cadets were equally good. In physical drill and marching they carried themselves steadily and well. The boy and girl pupils of Mr. J. W. M. Harrison contributed a number of excellent items to the display. Among them were wand exercises, gracefully performed by a party of girls, and "vaulting the horse by a squad of boys. Mr. Harrison himself gave a capable exhibition of Indian club swinging. Highland dancing by a party of juveniles was another popular item. Some of the children who took part in the tournament were of infant school age or thereabouts. One little chap who gallantly essayed the "Highland Fling" appeared to bo about four years old, and a little girl named Leslie, seven years of age, 'took secoud ■ place in an endurance skipping contest. Members of the N.Z.A.A. Association who, engaged in

running and other events lent additional variety to a programme which, oven without their assistance, would have covered a tolerably wide range. The weather was not so fine, as on previous days of the week, or the attendance would probably have been larger. A sum of .£SO was taken at the gates and in the side-shows. In addition, it is anticipated that a considerable sum will be accounted for by the sale of tickets prior to the tournament. Following is a list of awards in the various events:—
