A TRAGEDY AVERTED.
LOCAL CONSTABLE'S BRAVE ACT. Ho was a tiny atom of green and gold humanity, about three or four years of age—a little green-jerseyed fellow with a crown of golden curls— who'strolled on to the tramway track before an onrushing "Palace" car, opposite Barrett.'s Hotel on Lambton Quay at about 5 o'clock last evening. Those present were struck dumb with horror at what appeared to be the boy's certain death, as the alert motorman jambed his brakes too late,.it seemed, to prevent a sickening accident. What happened next deserves to bo recorded on paper other than that of a daily newspaper. Constable Sleath, on duty on Lambton Quay, taking in the situation in a fraction of a second, dashed across. the track, and literally scooped the little fellow out of harm's way. Just in time, too, for the car, still moving rapidly, brushed the constable's coat as he cleared the track. It was a daring act fraught wifb. great danger to the rescuer, and ono who witnessed the exploit says it deserves instant recognition. , The youngster was very little hurt from his fall—there was'only a look of wonder in his ,eyes at what had struck him. The passengers in the car, who had been thrown about by the sudden application of the brakes, could speak of nothing but Constable Sleath's brave act during the rest of the trip.
