CITY CEMETERY AND A FIRE.
■ : 9- . BUCKET BRIGADE AOT PROMPTLY The careless discharge of a fire-crack-er yesterday morning in the Sydney Street Cemetery started what might have developed into a serious fire but for the presence of mind and promptitude of a number of local residents who. quickly, formed themselves into a bucket and blanket brigade, and succeeded, after a quick contest, in suppressing the outbreak before -actual damage had been done. The fire broke out on the Bolton Street side, spreading quickly among the dry grass and shrubs, and scorching the fence which but for prompt action of the "brigade" would quickly have been ablaze. The northerly wind blowing at the time would have threatened the residences on the.opposite side had the fire got beyond the incipient stage. With the approach'of summer, it is to be hoped the authorities will guard against the wanton' and mischievous sotting alight of gorse in dangerous localities, always a fruitful 'scource. of damage and loss in the.hot weather.-
