BATHING COSTUME , ON BEACHES. The "Canadian" bathing coetume, whioh has. been the theme of inuch. discussion during the past four weeks, gave rise to a lengthy discussion in thp City Council last evening. A deputation representing the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association waited, on the Council to protest'against the costume being made compulsory, on the ground that it- was needlessly cumbersome. , Later, Councillor. Fitzgerald moved to rescind the council's resolution op the subject, passed at its meeting a month ago, Although the "Canadian" costume did not lqck champions, Councillor Fitzgerald ultimately induced the council to adopt his view. . Tl\e Mayor, who. olosed the discussion, said he intended "to vote ■as he had done on the former occasion for a neck-to-knee costume. Plenty of law was available to meet the case of anyone not• dressed .in a decent manner. In order to ensure che law being enforced, he proposed that application should be made to have the new caretaker at Lyall Bay appointed, a special constable, Anyone guilty of indecency, would be prosecuted, and .the case carried to the bitter end. The beach would be made a decent resort, where anybody could go. By ten votes to five the motion making "Canadian" costumes compulsory was rescinded, and the council decided to take the necessary steps.to have its Lyall Bay caretaker npnointed, a special constable.
