ROBBERIES ON A STEAMER.
1 : -3. . AWAKENED BY A HAND TINDER THE PILLOW. . The Union Company's steamer Manuka, which' arrived from Sydney on Wednesday, and left for the south last night, was the scene of some excitement duv? ing its stay in this port, as three robberies are alleged to hava taken place aboard the vessel. A second-class malepassenger reported to the police on Wednesday that- his purse, containing .£ls, was missing. He "left the purse containing the mpney on a wash-basin in the lavatory, and returning for it in a few. minutes found that it had disappeared. A young lady passenger by the boat reported to the, police yesterday that glio had lost her money and jewellery aboard the steamer. It is stated that when retiring to. bed l the previous evening she placpd. her money and jewellery in her reticule, and for greater safety she placed this under her pillow when she retired, About 5 "o'clock yesterday morninK s.he was awakened by a hand under her pillow, and saw a nian disappearing from the cabin with her bag in his band. Tho lady sprang out'of bed and gave phase, but'the man eluded her in the alley, way, and so far tho missing articles and money have not been traced. The jewellery in the bag is valued,, it is understood, at £30. ' ' . - .
