The head office and Wellington staff of the . Bank of New Zealand yesterday farewelled Jlr. J. S. Wilson, who is retiring from the' bank after 23 years' service, in order to go into the wool and produce business in Blenheim, in partnership with Mr. J. P. Bourko, of that town. Mr, Kane, the Wellington manager of the bank, on behalf of the staff, presented to Mr. Wilson an clectrbrplated liqueur stand, and, on behalf of Mrs. Wilson, a silver tea and coffee service and salvpr.: Mr. Harold Beaueliamp, of Messrs, Bannatyne and Co., Ltd., leaves Wellington this morning for the Wairarapa, on a short holiday trip. It is understood that llr. Priestly's appointment as one of the geologists of the Antarctic Expedition is due to the recommendation pf Professor David, of Sydney. He takes the place pf Mr. Allan Thomson. When Mr. Thomson asked to be released. Captain Scott communicated by cable wjth Professor David and also cqn'sultcd Sir Joseph Ward, who' offered no objection to an Australian taking the placo of a New Zealander. Mr. Priestly has beon working with Professor David since the. return of Shackleton's Expedition, preparing the geological results for publication.—Press Association.
Sir John Logan Campbell, the "Father of Auckland," celebrated his 9ith birthday yesterday, when he. received the congratulations of numerous callers, and also the felicitations and good wishes of many correspondents who forwarded telegraphic messages from all parts of the Dominion. Sir John, despite the weight of years, still retains a large measure of the excellent health that he has always enjoyed, and to-day received his cullers as usual nt his oftico in Shortland Strcot, and exchanged greetings with them with his customary cheerfulness.— I'ress Association. The Hev. F. S. Hartley, of St. Patrick's College, has received a cablegram announcing the death of his sister, Sister Mary John Baptist, at St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne. Mr. \V. G. The Hon. Major Harris, M.L.C., ivas yesterday granted a week's leave of absence from his Legislative duties. Mr. Harry Rice, the conductor of the orchestra in the Plimmea'-Denniston Company, is a member of the family who have achieved distinction in the tennis world in Australia. He is a brother of the one-time'champion of New South Wales, and plays a good game himself. Jlr. 11. Eice is a pianist, violinist, and, in an emergency, can do his part on a cornet or trombone. Mr. and. Mrs. C. B. Pharazyn and Messrs. L. and E. L. Pharazyn are leaving Wellington for Sydney to-day to catch the Orient liner Orsova at Sydney for London. . Mt. W. E. Mr. Marshall, who is 22 years old, has had a distinguished career both in schoU astic matters and athletics.
