A meeting of tho Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held in tho Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon. Tho president, Mr. J. S. Jameson, occupied the chair. Inspector Seed reported ■ having obtained three convictions for. ill-treating horses, and also condemning and destroying several animals. A. case had been brought under his notice where a' number of cattle had been placed in a paddock and left there until ten of them died of starvation. He had. inspected the animals still alive, and found them reduced to mere skeletons.. The matter had beeii placed in tho, hands of the stock inspector, but tho Department had taken 110 action. The secretary read a statement of accounts for the year. Mr. Watson pointed out that, had. it not been for the £60. subsidy from the City Council, the society would now be practically out .of funds,. having only something about £2 to their credit. After considerable' discussion it was decided to go into tho, question of appointing a collector for the suburbs, and to holding a Saturday street collection, at tho next meeting. A list of subscriptions for the year amounting to £5 10s. 6d., was read. J. Staples and-Co., £1 Is.; C. J. Crawford, £l;' Mrs. Riddiford, 10s.; Dr. M. W.. Ross,. 10s. Amounts less than ten shillings, £2 15s. 6d.
