OTAKI ITEMS.
For some days a man of an apparently ] erratic disposition has been about town,; and complaints reached the' police cori-, cerning him. Ho was arrested on a, charge of drunkenness, for which a fine of ss. was imposed, the Bench advising j accused x to leave the town. Two hours , later- he was re-arrestcd, and charged with committing a certain act at Rangiiivur The charge w a serious one, and lie was sentenced to a month's imprisonment. Constable Satherley intends .to ask the Police Department to' have the man medically examined. <U a meeting of tho local Horticultural Society (Mr. "\V. H. Simcox presiding) it was decidcd to ask the following to act as judges at the show in November:— Children's class, Hiss Lawson, of AVellington; domestic display, Miss Alexander, of Wellington; needlework, Mrs. Crichton, of Kimbolton; decorative class, Mrs. Langdon, of Wellington; fruit and vegetables, Mr. Mayo, of Foilding; pot plants and cut blooms,. Mr. Weiglitman,of Awahuri. It was resolved to invite Sir. Field, M.l'., to open the show. Mr. Walter Pohio, a brother to Mr. J. Fohio, of Otaki, and a recent arrival from Kaikoura, died at the local hospital on Monday morning, at the age of thirtyfour years". ' The pupils -of Miss Cobb s dancing class held a "iviml-iip" event on Friday night iu the Town Hall, when a'- programme of display 1 dancing, etc., was given by the children. A very pretty item was a sword dance by Misses Una Bright and Dorothy Booth. Miss Rollo presided at the piano. A meeting of interest to residents of Otaki county was held on Friday evening,, to enter a protest against the action of tho I;oeal Dills Committee of the House of Representatives ill rejecting -the County Bill, which a large majority, of ratepayers desired should bo given effect to. Representatives were present from all parts of the Horowhenua County; and the action of the Government was strongly condemned. Many of the speakers spoke warmly, some pointing out that fully £0 or 90 per cent, of the ratepayers wished the Bill to pass. After considerable discussion, tho following motion, proposed by Mr.' J. G. Slovens, and seconded by Mr. L. St. George, was carried unanimously:—"That this meeting, in view of the' 1 Otaki Countv Bill being supported by an overwhelming majority of ratepayers, emphatically protests against the unjust and arbitrary action of Parliament in throwns it "out. n' l ' l unanimously decides to'mako itself heard and,felt at. thegeneral election in. 1911."-
