THE MEIKLE CASE.
• ♦ PROVISION ON SUPPLEMENTARY ESTDIATES. "Is,the Government*.'going to keep its promise to bring down a Bill dealing with the Meikle case this session P" This was the nature of a question asked in the Mouse of Representatives of' the Hon. T. Mackenzie by Mr. Wright, M.P. for Wellington South, yesterday. Mr. Wright explained that this Bill was not included in the list of measures which the Prime Minister had announced would be proceeded with - this session. In reply the Minister stated that Mr. Wright had better. give notice of his .question. It was, he added, of too great importance to be 1 disposed of without notice. _ , By way of a rejoinder Mr. _ Wright added that on the last occasion that lie asked the question he got an answer in the affirmative. It seemed to him that the promise was not going to be carried out this session. Subsequently Mr. Wright put a similar question to the Prime Minister who was absent when he first brought up the matter. , Sir Joseph said that to a deputation he had stated that lie intended to submit either legislation or a vote in regard to the matter. It had been found that legislation on the .subject would lie particular))' difficult. In addition Mr. Meikle liad informed him that ho did not favour legislation. .What he wanted was a vote. Ho proposed to nsk tlio Houso to make provision on the Supplements ry Estimates for an amount which the Government believed-should bo paid to Mr. Meiklo.
